Jenny Goeres (Spring 2013)

I have been painting watercolors for 20 years. I began by taking an evening class at Grays Harbor College, then got serious about learning to paint and actively sought out workshops and teachers who helped me develop my style and technique. I dabbled in a variety of mediums before trying watercolors, but from the moment when I first dipped my brush in water I stopped searching for anything else. I am inspired by the sun illuminating ordinary objects and transforming them with the play of shadows.

I take piles of pictures while traveling in Bolivia, India, Costa Rica and the beaches and rivers of Western Washington and bring them home to my studio to paint. I use the photographs from my travels to show ordinary things and daily lives of the people who inspire me so much with their graciousness, vivid colors, street markets and often very difficult lives. Many people ask me if I create my paintings on location – I’m afraid that I would be run over in traffic if I did! But I am learning to paint plein air and hope to bring some of its spontaneity into the studio. When I paint pictures of the people and places I have visited I am transported back to that place and I hope that I am able to do this for others when they look at my art. I hope that people who see my paintings are inspired to travel, volunteer, dream or remember trips of their own.
